Riding in Style: Building Your Puppy’s Confidence in the Car and Keeping Them Safe

By
Rebecca "Beck"

Not every puppy is ready to cruise the road on day one. Some feel unsure, others get the wiggles, and a few might panic the moment the door shuts. But with a little practice, lots of tasty treats, and the right support, your pup can learn to love the car! It just takes patience, encouragement, and plenty of positive experiences.

Car rides should feel exciting, not scary. With a slow and steady approach, you can help your puppy feel safe and confident every time they hop in!

Step by Step: Building Car Confidence

Take it one step at a time and keep things fun. Every small win helps your pup build trust and comfort in the car. Don’t be afraid to go back a step if your pup seems unsure. Progress isn’t always linear, and that’s okay!

1. Get in and out of the car with it off
Start by helping your puppy into the car while it’s parked and turned off. Let them hop in and out a few times. Offer treats, praise, and maybe hang out for a moment. Build up the amount of time you spend just relaxing in the car.

2. Add the engine noise
Once your pup is comfortable hanging out inside, repeat the same routine, but now turn the engine on. Stay parked, keep those treats coming, and let your pup get used to the hum and vibration of the car running.

3. Back out, then pull right back in
Secure your pup in their crate or harness, turn the car on, and back out to the end of the driveway. Then pull back in and get out. That’s it! Make it short and sweet, and celebrate with a fun game or a snuggle session afterward.

4. Take a short ride
When your pup handles driveway drills like a pro, take a brief trip around the block. Keep it low-stress and end with something fun, like a sniffari or a visit to a favorite park or friend.

Take your time. There’s no rush. You can repeat any step as many times as needed, and if your pup struggles, go back a step. Rebuilding a pup’s association with the car takes time, consistency, and patience. Treats and praise are your best friends here.

Disclaimer: If your pup consistently vomits in the car, they may be experiencing motion sickness. Talk to your veterinarian about options to help them feel better.

Keep Your Puppy Safe in the Car

Confidence is important, but safety is just as critical. Puppies should always ride securely to stay safe during sudden stops or accidents.

Best Option: Crash-Tested Crates
The safest way to travel is in a properly sized crash-tested crate placed in the cargo area of your vehicle.
We recommend:

  • Ruffland
  • Gunner
  • K9 Kennel Boss
  • Impact

The crate should be just large enough for your puppy to stand up, lie down, and turn around comfortably. This helps prevent sliding and offers protection during travel. Check out our crating blog for more information!

Second Best: Crash-Tested Harnesses with Seatbelt Attachments
If a crate won’t work for your setup, use a crash-tested harness secured in the back seat.
We recommend:

  • OptimusGear Defender Harness
  • SleepyPod ClickIt
  • Ruffwear Load Up

Make sure the seatbelt attaches to the harness, never to a collar.

Avoid unsafe setups like letting your pup ride in your lap, loose in the back, or in the front seat. Even short trips can turn dangerous without proper safety gear.
