Riding in Style: Building Your Puppy’s Confidence in the Car and Keeping Them Safe

Not every puppy is ready to cruise the road on day one. Some feel unsure, others get wiggly, and a few might panic the moment the door shuts. But with a little practice and lots of tasty treats, your pup can learn to love the car! It just takes patience, encouragement, and plenty of positive experiences.

Car rides should feel exciting, not scary. With a slow and steady approach, you can help your puppy feel safe and confident every time they hop in!

Step by Step: Building Car Confidence

Take it one step at a time and keep things fun. Every win helps your pup build trust and comfort in the car.

  1. Start with the car turned off
Begin by helping your puppy into the car while it is parked and turned off. Sit with them, offer their favorite snacks, and let them explore. Make it a calm and happy place.
  2. Add engine noise
Once your pup is relaxed, practice the same routine with the car turned on. You are still parked, but your puppy gets used to the sound while continuing to enjoy snacks and praise.
  3. Back out and return
Next, buckle your pup in and back out of the driveway, then pull right back in. Keep it short and simple. Celebrate with play or extra cuddles afterward!
  4. Go for a short ride
When your puppy is doing great with driveway drills, go for a quick trip around the neighborhood. End with something fun so your pup associates the ride with a reward.

Each success builds your puppy’s confidence and helps car rides feel normal and easy. If you find your puppy gets sick in the car (it happens!) consult your veterinarian for next steps.

Keep Your Puppy Safe in the Car

Confidence is important, but safety is just as critical. Puppies should always ride in the car securely to protect them in case of sudden stops or accidents.

The safest way to travel is in a properly sized crash-tested crate placed in the trunk or cargo area of your vehicle.
The crate should be just large enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably. This keeps your pup from sliding and offers physical protection during travel. Check out our Crating Blog for more information!

The second safest option is a crash tested harness and seatbelt system in the back seat.
This setup keeps your pup safely restrained while still giving them some freedom to sit or lie down. Always attach the seatbelt to the harness, never to a collar.

Avoid letting your puppy ride in the front seat, loose in the back, or on your lap. Even short trips can become dangerous without proper safety measures.

Your puppy can become a happy, confident traveler with just a little time and the right support. Safe travel habits and positive associations go hand in hand. Whether your goal is stress-free vet visits or weekend road trips, it all starts with the first ride!
